With the Open Gaming License, d20 will live forever, especially since TSR (not The Sims Resource) is a subsidiary of Wizards of the Coast, which is a subsidiary of Hasbro.

That's a shame, and untimely as well. RIP.

Is d20 something other than a 20-sided die?

Yes, the underlying system of to-hit rolls and saving throws, etc., is called d20 now. Various types of worlds have been converted or developed for it under the OGL, which should make them fundamentally compatible, so you can combine, say, Call of Cthulu d20 with Tony DiGeralamo's Complete Mafia d20, and have goons fighting deep ones.
I think lots of converted worlds/games loose something in the conversion process, but "not having to learn a new set of rules/dice conventions" might get people to try something other than the tried-and-true D&D/fantasy setting. |
