Default Battle Sugar

Have you seen Battle Sugar on Iron Chef America yet?

Paula Dean and Cat Cora vs. Tyler Florence and Robert Irvine

Paula Dean can really trash talk!

Spoiler warning....

The girls kick butt!

Sorry. I have only ever seen the American version once.
During an off season series here.

It is not a patch on the real deal. Televised by the SBS network in Australia.
And has never been shown on Aussie TV since.
Sorry, but we don't like it. We wrote in and told them never to broadcast that version again.

Give me the real "Kaga San" any day. Not his doofus nephew.

I'm watching the end of it for the third time as I type. Paula Deen can really be over the top at times, but you can't say she isn't entertaining!

I think that if I were Tyler Florence, I'd have smacked Alton Brown with a pan after his umpteenth snide comment about that failed Buche de Noel, .

I had the same thing happen with a jelly roll, but I didn't know what I was doing and I was a teen at the time. Guess I should try it again sometime...

Yup, that was a fun episode. When they first announced it I figured that nobody would have a chance against Paula Deen and Cat Cora making desserts.

Tyler Florence's failed Buche de Noel made me wonder if he was sandbagging. He's not a pastry chef but I would have thought he would have done some practice runs before attempting to make it Kitchen Stadium.

He could have used the same base cake, cut it into thirds, made a nice rectangular layer cake, and called it something else... maybe "Milled Christmas Log"?

I think the problem was that even tho it was the first thing in the oven, it simply didn't have time to cool properly while rolled... I suspect that my cake broke for the opposite reason... it cooled too long and "set" in the rolled position, causing it to break when I unrolled it to fill and frost.

Now I'm thinking of making a "terrine" type cake.... you line the loaf pan with flat pieces of cake, fill the center with a really thick filling, seal with more cake, then chill it (to guarentee the filling doesn't ooze out). Gotta be a recipe on Epicurious...

I'm sure he could have come up with something to make from that cake.

That terrine cake sounds pretty neat! What kind of filling?

Sounds like just the thing for a "Brandy Egg Custard and tropical fruit" filling to me.

This is a chocolate filled cake, but I know I've seen similar recipes made in a loaf pan...

Bet there's a better recipe on Godiva.com...

Probably wouldn't have been time for the filling to chill properly either...

It is all just variation on the theme.

It's been a long time since I had a look through that sort of thing.
Like since before the Internet, long time. Thank's for the bookmarks Rose.

OMG. http://www.godiva.com/recipes/recipe.aspx?id=508 My blood sugar is soaring. Should I make this and probably kill my husband?

So yum, it's got to be immoral.

It's beginning to sound like a chocolate pie with the crust made of cake!

Oh, yeah, that's just got to be illegal.

Entrapment by chocolate, immoral for sure.

Not unpleasant mind you, just far too yummy.

Well, you do flip it over so it's dome shaped, and less pie looking.

Actually, I do have a recipe for upside-down pie. You put walnuts, butter and brown sugar on the bottom of the pie pan, make the pie on top of it, bake it, then flip it out so you have carmel and walnuts on top.

Darn, it's hard to find a recipe you know exists on the Pillsbury site!
