Lunar Eclipse
Okay, who else stood outside and said ooh and ahh, like we did last night?
Talking about the total lunar eclipse, visible in total last night through my hobby astronomers Optisan, 4 inch refracting telescope. I am going to find some really high power lenses and see if I can find "Eagle". Using a Plossy 6.5 mm lens, the craters inside the craters are as clear as if it was just across the street. I have also found the first peripheral this system can't "just work". Linux seems to have some trouble with the ubiquitous Logitech Quickcam web camera. Bugger, no pictures of a big red moon. |

I wanted to, but we had overcast skies last night. Darn it. I envy you. This must be my punishment for living in a swamp at the focus of hurricane alley.

Ooh, a swamp, I like swamps.
It did look spectacular. Especially once the eclipse began to recede. Showing inverted in the telescope, the re-illumination from the apparent top down was beautiful. A deep orange to red at the bottom, with a distinct grey twilight band, then the top a brilliant silver white in full light. With the most powerful magnification I can get, we started counting the craters in the craters. Pity about the webcam. Regards that. Yes, mate. I found them after a google search last night, and downloaded them. Then went off to the Mandriva forum site and went pale at what I read there. With my luck it will be the model that uses the other driver set I have not downloaded yet. And now all I have to do, is make sure I have matched kernel sources, and modules and Lord only knows, for both drivers just in case, and then just "do" a make all, and make clean, and make install, and, and. Oh well. Roll up the sleeves, pop the bonnet, and hack. At least with Linux we can do that. |

Lucky me, I was leaving Shreveport just before dawn and got to see it in totality for a little while. It was beautiful! I love lunar eclipses...last one I saw was on my birthday last year! I took it as a good sign, and I did have a pretty good year!

Just one of the good things about living outside a little country town. The town and the main highway through to the state capital are way down in the valley. 3 or 4 miles away.
No noise, no stray lights. Quiet and peaceful. Views over rolling hills in every direction. |

There are times when I dream of living in a dry place with no clouds and no city glow. The first time I stopped by my sister and brother-in-law's farmhouse in Illinois it was a clear winter night, and I just spent the first fifteen minutes lying back against my car and gawking at the stars.

It is to dream. The bonus spectacular meteorites and shows they put on at the right time of year is great.
Speaking of which, I'd better start looking for some lenses and filters to fit my telescope. Be dark of moon in a week, nice viewing then. If skies are clear ( yeah right, no rain in 8 weeks, it's going to cloud up now?) I'll point out towards the Magellanic clouds, they should show nicely. Now that I seem to have that itch back again. Then on tonights news there is that "arty" fellow who is building a big banana, to float over Texas. What the? Maybe he's still "like, all freaked man" over old Ronnie Raygun's "Star Wars" gizmo? I know. He's building a giant funny hat, to protect Texas from the evils of, (this station identification is brought to you by Dole Banana's.) the north. Bah, hippies. Eats too many lentil burgers. Giant banana's in orbit indeed. |

<hijack>Anyone ever play a card game called Illumenati? There's a killer card called "Orbital Mind Control Laser" which will rip your setup to shreds if your opponent gets it, and there aren't many counters to it. So I made a house rule -- if you make a hat out of aluminum foil and actually wear it, you and your cards are immune to the Orbital Mind Control Laser. Haven't had anyone get desperate enough to do this yet!</hijack>

Ok, I'm not awake; it's actually Orbital Mind Control Satellite. Morning brainfart there!
http://www.sjgames.com/illuminati/ Started as a collectible game, until Wizards of the Coast snagged a patent on the collectible card game. Of course, many companies did what they should have done in the first place, and just re-released the game as complete sets. |

Somehow, obtaining a fnorder has escaped making its way onto my list of life's goals.

I can't understand why. I just had to have one.
As soon as I realised they were available, I just had to get a fnorder. I mean, life without a fnorder is like, life without lots of other totally useless things. I'll bet Paris hasn't got a fnorder. I'll bet Paris can't even spell fnorder. |

I just used the one on the SJG site...
Paris probably will be an option on the next fnorder! |

Sorry, had to back track the threads.
Um, no. No mention of pillows. Note to self. Beware of Greg's sense of humour, it makes the floor rush up at one. |
