Have you tried deleting the package and cache files from My Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2?

Yep, that one and the two package files as well. Leave the one with no extension alone.

Omigoodness! That's one I wouldn't have thought of!

Melva bought Teen Style as a stocking stuffer but it went back to the store with a nastygram when I learned it was a Trojan for SecuROM. Now I'm doubly glad I didn't take the risk!

well I found the groups.cache but there's only one package file in that folder, cigen.package. Is that the other one I should delete?

Yep. The third file is accessory.cache.

Sometimes it helps to delete the contents of the Thumbnails folder too.

It is advised to delete these files after every installation of custom content.
They are the content data bases the game uses.
The game will automatically rebuild them at start up.
And yes, the more custom content you have the slower the game will load.

There should also be a "No-CD" fix for Teen Style out now, to get rid of Sony's SecuRom.

So, according to rumor, the complete list of files you should delete after each installation of custom content is:
cigen.package
groups.cache
accessory.cache
What happens if you do not delete these files?

Well just groups.cache didn't fix it.
All three did.

Sometimes the game crashes at the splash screen. Sometimes your new stuff gets weird or no thumbnails.

If you add Windkeeper's natural color manniquin skin, you have to delete the contents of the Thumbnails folder so your thumbnails will regenerate with the colored skin instead of the gray one.

That thumbnails trick might fix the problem I have where sims in my sim bin show up with the wrong thumbnails.

Now I'm wondering if it would be possible to edit the thumbnails so that the things that show up in the accessories catalog tell what they are.

That is exactly right mate.

The easiest way to edit the thumbnails, is to delete them, and let the game rebuild them itself.
After every custom content install.
