My Home Town is Famous!
According to the Wikipedia, the first American in space was born in my home town!
Erm… that is… the monkey named Miss Abel was born at the zoo in Independence, Kansas. Well, all right, so maybe that’s not such a great claim to fame, but Independence is also the site of Laura Ingalls Winder’s Little House on the Prairie, the internationally famous Neewollah Festival, and, better yet, organized baseball’s first night game! My hometown is slowly becoming the new Hollywood!
We've had several movies filmed around here lately, most recently The Guardian and Premonition. My best friend was an extra recently in a Samuel L. Jackson movie and got to meet him as well as "Stifler's Mom" from the American Pie movies. Jack Black and Ice Cube have been around town lately, too! And they're building a studio in Shreveport! I have yet to meet anybody super famous, though...wouldn't mind being an extra if something was available on one of my days off. Also: Apparently Hank Williams Sr. was married in Minden 3 months before he died, though the wedding wasn't legal. The creator of The Brady Bunch was born here. And Louis Dunbar ("Sweet Lou") went to the junior high school here, back when it was the black high school before desegregation. He was a center for the Harlem Globetrotters. Did get to meet him when he came and did a speech when I was attending that same junior high school. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minden%2C_Louisiana Last edited by Kaylyn : 04-19-2008 at 09:09 PM. |

I thought Abel was male. I did see Miss Baker in Huntsville once... over 20 years ago.

Well... our (new where we moved in November) town's biggest claim to fame seems to be Alan Ayckbourn and his theatre, which we love! And mediaeval herring fishing. And the cold but beautiful British seaside.
Can't think about anything famous about the town I was born in except maybe the National Front and that's not something to be pleased about... |

Mediaeval herring fishing! Now there's something to be proud of!
