Prevent Vote Fraud
Over the years, a lot of people have expressed consternation about the apparent manipulation of the vote counter and hit counter on the Ultimate Sims List.
Requiring that someone entry an ID to vote would kind of spoil the whole direct-vote system, so I'm really open for ideas about how to prevent this from happening. One possibility would be to track all votes and validated votes separately. |

Yes, voting needs to be one per visitor if possible. I'm pretty sure I've voted for several sites more than once.
Thing is, if you track IPs, they could change, especially for people on dialup. As for the hit counter... if someone has the patience to sit there hitting back so they can hit their link again... they need a life. Real bad. |

The problem with both the direct-vote counter and the hit counter is that it's easy to write a script that opens the URL and then recursively calls itself.
That's much more difficult if you have to log in because the script would have to handle all the login protocol. I'm sure that spammers know how to do that but I sure don't. |

Handling logins is ridiculously easy. You just add the username and password to the yew-are-eye, as Anja would say.
