Hi, I'm Tom
Just stopping in to say Hi. I mostly lurk around but you'll see me post from time to time. :)
|
Hi Tom! You know where the coffee is!
|
Hey, Tom! come out to the light, lurking is for vampires! :)
|
Hi Tom! No need to lurk, we're friendly here! ;)
|
Hi, Tom! Welcome to our new toy! :D
Hey, I noticed an article on your site where it says "A senior Microsoft executive told a BBC World documentary that people should use commercial software if they're looking for stability [instead of open-source software]." That got me to thinking... within my experience, open-source applications have been much more reliable than commercial software. I'd say the difference in reliability between The Sims 2 and SimPE is quite apparent. This also holds true for the Microsoft Office suite in comparison to the open-source tools I'm using in my day job. |
Well, although SimPE is allegedly open-source, no one except the original developer has ever seen a line of it. But SimPE doesn't do most of the irrational things the game does!
I've never crashed PhotoShop, but I've never crashed Gimp either! |
I have crashed Photoshop. If I try to run Photoshop and Microsoft Outlook at the same time, Photoshop craters.
B'b'but... I thought that the source code for SimPE was available on SourceForge. |
There's an "entry" on SourceForge, but last time I looked, no actual code. It's been a while since I looked tho.
|
Just checked again... no actual code. http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...roup_id=133134
The only "source code" is "localization files," which I assume are for translators. |
Greg,
Yeah, I'm usually a big Linux user, but I've yet to put Linux back on this machine, been to easy just to stay in Windows. But I love open source software. |
I'm particularly sensitive to Windows issues at the moment. This afternoon I tried to let XP do a simple update and ended up having to reboot the machine four times in the process of installing a patch so that I could install the update to get an update.
Three hours of down time... grumble... grumble... grumble... |
My CD drive killed my Linux yesterday :P
Waiting for clever techy Linux-programmer son to fix it. Meanwhile Windoze is moderately reliable. And one vital reason to have Windows - there are NO SIMS on Linux! (well Second Life is, but that's not quite Sims!) |
Yeah, Windows has really been fairly reliable for me, too. I'm flinchy about have to reboot on demand because of a peculiarity in my home network. Every time I reboot one of the Windows boxes, I have to take the Macintoshes off line because they go through an Airport, and there's a misconfiguration in teh Aiport that I haven't been able to figure out. The Windows machines don't get a screwy IP address if the Airport is on line while they're starting up.
