End of an era?
While poking around this morning, I tried to hop over to the Blarney Stone.
Imaging my surprise when I discovered your basic squatter link site! Yeah, I know, people's interests change, but the Blarney Stone is one of those sites you just assume will be around in some form forever... |
Aw, darn. There's not much you can do if you lose interest; it costs a lot money to maintain a web site on line. Once upon a time, my hope for SimsHost was that it would be able to keep sites available, but it didn't turn ou that way.
I often wonder how cybersquatters can afford to do that. I suspect that they are fronts for an apparently legitimate domain name registrar that makes a lot of money selling your stolen domain name back to you. |
Actually, it's probably one web site with about a zillion domain names parked on it and a php script that figures out which quasi-page to display for the "visited" domain name. The rest of your theory is probably right!

Right. It's not the web site that costs so much, but the domain name registration. Of course, if you are the domain name registrar, I suppose you can charge yourself anything you want, including zero.
